Nnamdi Asomugha Signs One-Year Deal With San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers caught another big fish in the NFL free agency pool on Tuesday by coming to terms with veteran cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on a one-year deal for as much as $3 million.

After being released by the Philadelphia Eagles earlier in the NFL off-season, Asomugha received considerable interest around the league with many teams believing that the cornerback may have been a victim of the system in Philadelphia.

Although unable to make an impact with the Eagles after signing an enormous deal with the team following his final season with the Oakland Raiders, Asomugha was able to draw the interest of the 49ers and the New Orleans Saints.

With the Saints attempting to rebuild the defense with some big-name players in the off-season, Asomugha was near the top of the list of potential candidates to come in and make a drastic change. Defensive end Dwight Freeney was also one of the players New Orleans was targeting this off-season, but the team may not be able to land either player in free agency.

As for Asomugha, the veteran corner will have his work cut out for him in San Francisco in order to prove himself next season. The 49ers were already considered one of the best all-around defenses in the NFL before signing Asomugha putting tremendous pressure on the corner that was once considered elite at his position in the NFL.

Even though Asomugha is coming off two disappointing seasons in Philadelphia, the 49ers feel confident the veteran may be a game-changer in the secondary and will only make a dominant defense that much more intimidating. It remains to be seen whether or not Asomugha will truly make an impact for the 49ers, but it’s not much of a gamble for the defending NFC champions with a one-year deal.
