The Arizona Cardinals finally decided to cut their losses heading into the NFL off-season by parting ways with quarterback Kevin Kolb after two seasons. Kolb was acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles two years ago in exchange for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
Once acquired by the Cardinals, Kolb was considered to be the future face of the franchise and the answer the team was looking for at the quarterback position. Kolb was thought to resurrect the quarterback position in Arizona with the team failing to recover after the retirement of Kurt Warner a few years earlier.
Unfortunately, things didn’t work out as anticipated with Kolb battling through injuries the entire time he was in Arizona. With Kolb unable to stay healthy and the team attempting to go in another direction during the off-season, the veteran quarterback was let go with the quarterback unwilling to restructure his deal in order to stay in Arizona.
With Kolb a free agent, the Buffalo Bills came calling showing a considerable interest in the veteran after releasing Ryan Fitzpatrick recently. Kolb may not be a game-changer for the Bills, but a smart move considering the quarterbacks available on the open market.
Fitzpatrick ultimately signed with the Tennessee Titans after veteran Matt Hasselbeck was released by the team in similar fashion in comparison to Kolb’s situation in Arizona.
Along with signing Kolb, the Bills signed Tarvaris Jackson during the off-season to help fill the void at the quarterback position. Obviously, Jackson was considered to be a short-term fix along with Kolb and both veterans will compete for the starting role under center heading into next season.
Although not a considerable upgrade in comparison to Fitzpatrick, Kolb will have an opportunity to resurrect his career in Buffalo if he can beat out Jackson to become the starter.
