The Green Bay Packers made an early exit in the NFL playoffs last year with second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick running all over the defense on route to a record-setting 181 rushing yards and four total touchdowns. Although the season ended in disappointment for the Packers, the future remains bright in Green Bay with the team making an effort to keep the team’s best players on both sides of the football around for the long-term with lucrative contract extensions.
Defensive end Clay Matthews is one of the two elite players on the roster set to sign a lucrative long-term deal. Matthews was unable to be a game-changer for Green Bay in the postseason, but has been arguably one of the best defensive players in the league over the past four years ever since being drafted out of USC in the 2009 NFL Draft.
Matthews is without a doubt the leader of the defense and will be for years to come. With that being said, the Packers’ front office has made it a priority to sign the linebacker to a contract extension before his rookie deal expires following the 2013 NFL season.
Reportedly, Green Bay is extremely close on a new deal with Matthews that could pay the linebacker at least $13 million annually. As a result of the new contract, Matthews will become one of the highest-paid players at his position in the NFL.
Along with Matthews on the verge of inking a new deal, the Packers are close to making superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers the highest-paid player in the league. Green Bay and Rodgers is supposedly $2 million apart on contract talks and will likely have a deal done in the coming days or weeks.
The team has made it a priority to sign Rodgers to a new deal before the start of next season.
