The Oakland Raiders continue to make bold moves during the NFL off-season in order to get the storied NFL franchise back on track following a disappointing 4-12 season.
The latest bold move by the Raiders comes at the quarterback position with the team acquiring Matt Flynn from the Seattle Seahawks and trading Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals. Flynn being acquired by the team had been rumored to be happening for the past week or so, but Palmer being traded to the Cardinals was an interesting development with Oakland thought to simply release the veteran quarterback to make room for Flynn.
Before being traded to the Cardinals, Palmer wasn’t happy with his situation in Oakland. The Raiders asked the veteran to take a pay cut to continue playing in Oakland. Palmer was set to earn $13 million next season and the Raiders were only willing to pay $10 million of his base salary.
Unfortunately for Oakland, Palmer wasn’t thrilled about the prospect of taking the pay cut to play with the Raiders and compete with Terrelle Pryor for the starting role with the team.
As a result, the Raiders’ front office aggressively pursued Flynn with the Seahawks letting it be known they were willing to consider offers for their backup quarterback.
Before the 2012 campaign, the Seahawks signed Flynn to a three-year deal worth $19.5 million. Flynn was thought to be the new face of the franchise in Seattle until rookie Russell Wilson emerged a legitimate starter and the better option for the team under center.
With Flynn expendable in Seattle, the team decided to part ways with the backup due to his large contract. The Raiders were willing and able to pull off the deal in exchange for draft picks.
