The New England Patriots have made some questionable moves during the NFL off-season thus far by parting ways with players that have been crucial to their success over the past decade or so.

Over the past year, the Patriots had been talking off and on with perennial Pro Bowl wide receiver Wes Welker in order to lock up the veteran to a lucrative long-term deal. Although New England had no desire to part ways with Welker, the two sides simply couldn’t see eye-to-eye with their longtime slot receiver and ultimately missed the opportunity to sign him.

With Welker signing with the Denver Broncos adding to Peyton Manning’s arsenal, the Patriots quickly found a replacement in the form of Danny Amendola. New England settled with an injury prone receiver in place of arguably their best receiver in franchise history making the outlook of the upcoming season shaky at best.

Interestingly enough, the Patriots may go in a familiar direction in the off-season to bring in another controversial veteran in the form of Terrell Owens.

Superstar quarterback Tom Brady was recently spotted at the USC campus working out with Amendola and Owens. Although there’s been no indication on whether or not the Patriots have any interest in Owens, it’s safe to say that if these workouts went well and Brady felt some chemistry developing with the veteran wideout that the team may take a chance on Owens with a one-year deal.

This situation is similar to the time when the Patriots acquired Randy Moss from the Oakland Raiders. Although a very questionable move, New England still pulled the trigger and almost recorded a perfect season as a result with Brady and Moss becoming the best quarterback-receiver combination in the NFL.

It remains to be seen the level of interest from New England, but the gamble may be worth the risk.
