After starting out the 2012-13 NBA season red-hot and turns a lot of heads around the league as a result, the New York Knicks were thought to be the stiffest competition for the defending NBA champion Miami Heat this year.
Along with being the toughest challenge for LeBron James and company in the Eastern Conference, the Knicks were also considered a legitimate NBA title contender with Carmelo Anthony hitting his stride and head coach Mike Woodson seemingly being the right man calling the shots from the sidelines.
Unfortunately, as the season progressed, New York appeared to have lost their luster due to a number of injuries and inconsistent play. Despite their struggling and losing forward Amar’e Stoudemire for the rest of the regular season with a knee injury that required surgery, the Knicks have bounced back as of late winning 10 in a row while keeping a tight grip on the second seed in the East.
On Wednesday night, Anthony and company headed to Philips Arena in Atlanta to take on the Hawks on their home floor. Although Atlanta was favored to come out on top with a point and a half spread, the Knicks proved to be too much for Josh Smith’s squad and pulled off the convincing victory over the Hawks.
Melo continued his hot streak in the scoring department lighting up the Hawks for 40 points. Even though it was nowhere near the career night against the Heat in South Beach a night earlier, Anthony continues to make a case for NBA MVP this season leading his Knicks to a high seed in the conference and an impressive streak that might extend all the way into the NBA playoffs.
As of right now, New York appears to be the toughest challenge for Miami with Anthony playing out of his mind and ready to contend for a title while leading the way for New York.
