The Washington Redskins have been a mess over the last few years with owner Daniel Snyder doing everything within his power and his wallet to try and turn this struggling NFL franchise around. Fortunately, before last season the controversial owner made some moves to drastically improve this team and one of those moves was bringing in two-time Super Bowl champion head coach Mike Shanahan.
This move to bring in a new head coach with a resume like Shanahan’s was definitely a move in the right direction, but the real problem in the nation’s capital seems to be at the quarterback position. Last season veteran gunslinger Donovan McNabb didn’t work out and he was ultimately dealt to the Minnesota Vikings, but before this season began Rex Grossman was named the starter under center.
After a few impressive performances and a first place standing in the NFC East division, naming Rex Grossman as the starting quarterback was the right move, but heading into Week 7 a change has been made with Mike Shanahan going with John Beck under center.
There is no question that many NFL analysts and football fans anticipated this move because Rex Grossman has never been a great starting quarterback in the league and has failed to play consistently well, but after four interceptions in the loss to the division rival Philadelphia Eagles (20-13) it was time to make a move in Shanahan’s opinion.
Personally, I believed that John Beck was the best option for Mike Shanahan before the season even began, but the gamble to use Rex Grossman paid off early as the team has a legitimate shot to win the NFC East division. Now things will get interesting with Beck under center in Week 7 against the Carolina Panthers.
