It looks like the Washington Redskins will be without QB Donovan McNabb for their next pre-season game this Friday against the New York Jets as he is having issues with his ankle, which apparently began during Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, in which Baltimore claimed a victory.
At practice on Monday, McNabb, who was traded from Philadelphia to Washington in April, was wearing a protective boot and he was limited to participation in the practice. Then on Tuesday, McNabb was not wearing the protective boot and although he was still unable to participate in practice, he did walk on a treadmill.
While neither McNabb or Coach Shanahan aren’t too concerned with the minor ankle injury although is it really sore, the ankle is going to require some rest and TLC so that he’ll be up to par for regular season.
The only thing that sucks about this whole situation is that McNabb is going to miss a huge chunk of the pre-season. 33-year-old McNabb really needed the pre-season to warm up and improve with his receivers in regards to timing and what not especially after the no-so-perfect performance from last Saturday’s game; however, he is trying to learn a new offensive system so it is going to take some time.
However, McNabb fans, don’t worry, he’ll likely be back up and ready to go in time for the regular season since it is three weeks away – it should give his ankle plenty of time to heal properly and thoroughly.
For this Friday’s pre-season game against New York, Rex Grossman will replace McNabb on the field. In practice for this week’s game against the Jets, we have seen backups John Beck as well as Richard Bartel (who has previously been out to a strained groin and has not participated in a pre-season game thus far); therefore, they’ll likely get plenty of playing time this week.
As for September 2, when the Redskins play at Arizona for their final pre-season game, we aren’t sure who will be playing the most – McNabb, Grossman, Beck, or Bartel.
