It seems that the Washington Redskins and the Minnesota Vikings haven’t been too happy with their new quarterback situation as both teams have decided to make a change heading into Week 7. The switch in Washington wasn’t much of a surprise as no one gave Rex Grossman much of a chance to be the starter throughout the regular season, but the switch in Minnesota to rookie Christian Ponder and benching of veteran Donovan McNabb has turned some heads.
There is no question at this point in the NFL regular season that Donovan McNabb has been a disappointment with the Minnesota Vikings thus far as the team is sporting a 1-5 record and last place standing in the NFC North division with McNabb under center. It would be hard to argue that McNabb is the cause of all the problems in Minnesota, but he definitely hasn’t been the Pro Bowl caliber quarterback that head coach Leslie Frazier was expecting to replace Brett Favre this season.
With that being said, the decision to replace Donovan McNabb in favor of rookie quarterback Christian Ponder has been unanimous and the new starting quarterback will get his first start this weekend when the Minnesota Vikings take on the undefeated defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers in Week 7.
This move to change quarterbacks heading into a showdown with arguably the best team in the league and the division is a bit of a head-scratcher, but I guess it would be a great test to see whether or not the rookie quarterback can hold up under pressure. It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if Frazier put McNabb back in if Ponder starts to struggle, but as of right now the rookie will get the green light.
