It isn’t very common for teams around the NFL to make drastic roster moves before Week 1 and once the NFL preseason is finished, but that is exactly what the Jacksonville Jaguars have done as they are set to cut starting David Garrard before the beginning of the upcoming NFL regular season. This is an interesting move by the Jaguars as head coach Jack Del Rio made it clear that there was no quarterback controversy and David Garrard was his starting, but now he is about to cut his starter and go with Luke McCown under center with rookie Blaine Gabbert as his backup.
Personally, this move leaves me scratching my head because now the quarterback position is in the hands of an inexperienced player with a rookie as his backup. David Garrard will be fine in terms of getting picked up as there are many teams around the league that might be very interested in signing him for the short term like the Seattle Seahawks and the Kansas City Chiefs, but it seems like an unnecessary risk just before Week 1 of the NFL regular season where they are set to face off against the Tennessee Titans in an important divisional game.
Obviously, head coach Jack Del Rio has a plan and knows what he is doing, but his job will almost certainly be on the line if this drastic move blows up in his face at some point in the regular season. The only real reason I can think of for such a drastic move which basically leaves a team without a dependable starting quarterback is money.
The Jacksonville Jaguars will save about $9 million dollars by cutting David Garrard. Along with getting rid of Garrard, the Jaguars might also part ways with Del Rio as team owner Wayne Weaver said that he would accept no less than a playoff appearance this season in order for the head coach to keep his job.
