The last two weeks have been very emotional and taxing for the Oakland Raiders as they have had to deal with the loss of NFL innovator and controversial owner Al Davis. With the Raiders having their best season in years and a legitimate shot of contending for a playoff spot and an AFC West division title, Oakland has been a fun team to watch this season, but just a week after losing their owner they have also lost starting quarterback Jason Campbell to a broken collarbone.
It was uncertain how bad the injury was and how soon Campbell would be back on the field for new head coach Hue Jackson, but with the verdict coming in that the veteran could miss the rest of the season due to the need of surgery, the Raiders had to make a move in order to save their season.
Fortunately, the Oakland Raiders didn’t wait long to make this move as they looked around the league for free agents and potential trades. The obvious choice seemed to be signing Josh McCown or bringing back Trent Edwards as a backup to Kyle Boller, but the consensus was that they needed a better player and as a result they went after Carson Palmer of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Ever since the beginning of the NFL regular season, the Cincinnati Bengals have been reluctant to abide by Carson Palmer’s trade demands. As a result of Bengals owner Mike Brown saying that he would rather see Palmer retired then to trade him, no one thought the Raiders would be able to pull off a deal, but that didn’t turn out to be the case with the former Heisman trophy winner from USC getting traded for two first-round draft picks.
This move has been considered to be a game-changer for the Oakland Raiders as they finally have a proven quarterback under center, but the first real test for Palmer will come this weekend as he has been named the starter over Kyle Boller for Week 7 against the division rival Kansas City Chiefs.
