The Chicago Bears came into this NFL regular season as the defending NFC North division champions and with a serious chip on their shoulders after losing to the arch division rival Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game. With the loss to the Packers still fresh in the minds of the Bears players, Chicago was determined to get back on track this season as one of the elite teams in the NFC Conference.
Despite the Bears best efforts to get off to a good start to the season, the storied Chicago franchise lost three out of the first five games of the season. With the same problems plaguing this team by being unable to protect Jay Cutler, the consensus was that the Pro Bowl caliber quarterback was destined to get hurt this year with one of the weakest offensive lines in the NFL.
Even though the Bears still struggled to protect their franchise quarterback, Chicago was able to turn things around as they came into Week 11 with four straight wins and a shot at winning the NFC North division once again. Unfortunately, despite beating the San Diego Chargers in convincing fashion on Sunday at Soldier Field (31-20), the Chicago Bears may have lost Jay Cutler for the rest of the season.
There is no question at this point in time that Jay Cutler is a tough quarterback and has been able to sustain hit after hit due to his weak offensive line, but now it appears his season is in doubt after suffering a broken thumbs in Sunday’s win. Cutler’s season isn’t a total loss just yet as he is set to have surgery on his broken thumb, but in all likelihood he won’t play another down in the regular season.
The Chicago Bears are currently in third place in the NFC North with a 7-3 record and a five-game winning streak intact. Backup quarterback Caleb Haine will take over as the starter from here on out.
