The New York Jets made a controversial decision before last season to trade for backup quarterback Tim Tebow from the Denver Broncos. Although Tebow made a huge impact with the Broncos leading the storied NFL franchise into the NFL playoffs and a playoff win against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Despite a successful and promising run with the Broncos, Denver landed four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning in free agency and chose to trade Tebow to the Jets.
The Jets trade was questionable at best with New York committing to starting quarterback Mark Sanchez for the long haul before making the deal for Tebow. Ultimately, Tebow caused nothing but a media frenzy in New York leading to his eventual release in early in the NFL off-season in 2013.
With Jets parting ways with Tebow, the consensus seemed to be that the two-time BCS champion would not receive much interest around the league as a free agent. Tebow was unable to display his skillset with the Jets due to the team’s reluctance to put him under center in favor of Greg McElroy.
Once Sanchez was benched and head coach Rex Ryan chose to go in a different direction other than Tebow, the speculation ran rampant about the team preparing to trade or release the quarterback in the off-season and did just that.
Although it the New England Patriots seemingly had no interest in Tebow and the media frenzy it would bring to the team next season, the Patriots decided to sign the former Heisman trophy winner to be one of the backups superstar gunslinger Tom Brady at the quarterback position.
The Patriots currently have promising young prospect Ryan Mallett as the team’s backup behind Brady on the depth chart. Tebow was signed to be used as a quarterback, but head coach Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels may mix things up next season.
