After constantly going back and forth in trade discussions, the Los Angeles Clippers and Boston Celtics have left the blockbuster deal on the table for the time being. Head coach Doc Rivers has reportedly lost interest in becoming the lead man on the sidelines in Los Angeles while the NBA continues to put up roadblocks in getting a deal done.
The biggest problem with the current proposal on the table for the Clippers has been giving up a second first-round draft pick in exchange for Rivers. The Clippers have made it clear that their main motivation for pursuing the deal with the Celtics has been to bring in Rivers with Kevin Garnett and potentially Paul Pierce being short-term consolation prizes.
With Rivers supposedly no longer wanting a part of this deal between these two franchises, the deal may ultimately be dead and unable to come to fruition in the near future. The Clippers are attempting to go all-in on this deal in order to become instant title contenders next season and the year after while also convincing superstar point guard Chris Paul to re-sign with the team long-term next month.
Paul has become part of the process of getting the deal done in terms of his input. The perennial All-Star is all for Rivers and Garnett coming to Los Angeles, but if the deal doesn’t get done because the front office refused to part ways with the draft pick then Paul’s stance on the team may sour at the wrong time with free agency set to get underway on July 1.
It remains to be seen whether or not this deal will actually get done, but there could be some dire consequences for the Clippers if the trigger isn’t pulled and Rivers and or Garnett are not headed to Los Angeles.
