After weeks of speculation, the Los Angeles Clippers have officially acquired head coach Doc Rivers from the Boston Celtics. Although it took much longer and turned out to be a drawn out process that no one anticipated going as long as it did. Not only will Rivers take over for Vinny Del Negro at head coach, but will also become the team’s vice president of basketball operations.
Obviously, the Celtics were in full rebuilding mode while the Clippers were desperately seeking a replacement for Del Negro that could right the ship immediate and convince Chris Paul to re-sign for the long-term. Rivers is the ideal fit for the Clippers with the ability to turn things around and bring the locker room together in Los Angeles.
With Rivers in the fold in Los Angeles, the team may decided to stay active in terms of bringing in more pieces to the championship puzzle. Although the team seems content with Rivers and the current roster, there’s a chance that the team may go after Paul Pierce if the Celtics chose to buy him out before the deadline on June 30.
Pierce is set to make $15.3 million in the final year of his deal in Boston and can be bought out for $5 million. Despite the team simply parting ways with Pierce with a buyout, there’s a chance they trade him to a team like the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs were dangling two second-round draft picks in exchange for the face of the storied franchise, but the Celtics turned it down immediately with the team feeling lowballed by the Cavs.
It remains to be seen what the Celtics will do moving forward, but there’s a chance they could deal Pierce and Garnett may retire as a result.
