Friday, general manager for the Houston Astros, Ed Wage, confirmed that Roy Oswalt has asked that he be traded from the team. The request has been made earlier this week when Oswalt’s agent, Bob Garber, made a phone call to Drayton McLane, the owner of the Houston Astros, who are currently in last place in the NL Central.
Wade says that he wants three-time NL All-Star Oswalt on the team and wants to win with him on the team. Wade says that they want to win with all the men that are on their team. However, should other possibilities become available, they are willing to look at them. Wade says that he is not going to act as if the phone call was never made and that the request from pitcher Roy Oswalt was never made. It will all be acknowledged.
As of Friday’s game against Tampa Bay, the Astros are at 14-27, which is the worst record in the history of the National League. Oswalt has had nine consecutive starts up to par with a 2.66 ERA but is currently 2-6. Although he has had nine superior starts, the last six games with the Astros have been lost.
Oswalt is aware of the terms within his $73 million five-year contract agreement with the Houston Astros, which he is in the fourth year of, where there is a clause for no trading. However, Oswalt is ready to waive this within the contract. Oswalt’s contract currently has him at $15 million for this 2010 season and $16 million for next season in 2011.
The trading deadline is just a couple months away, July 31. The request has been put in to the Astros on the behalf of Oswalt. Whether the Astros will permit a trade is still to be seen.
