With the Seattle Seahawks finally turning the corner last season by winning 11 games, clinching a playoff spot and getting the best of the Washington Redskins in the postseason, the team has decided to stick with quarterback Russell Wilson as the future face of the franchise.
Before the 2012 campaign began for the Seahawks, the team signed free agent Matt Flynn to a three-year deal worth $19.5 million. Flynn was one of the more intriguing quarterbacks on the open market and the Seahawks had a void to fill with Matt Hasselbeck gone and no viable replacement since the veteran left for the Tennessee Titans.
Along with signing Flynn, the Seahawks drafted Wilson out of Wisconsin. Although Wilson wasn’t considered to be a star in the NFL or anything other than a career backup at the position due to his size, the rookie flourished in front of head coach Pete Carroll’s eyes during training camp and earned the starting job.
Once the 2012 season was officially over, the team let it be known that they were open to trading Flynn with the veteran wanting another opportunity elsewhere and the Seahawks not all that crazy about keeping a high-priced backup.
With Flynn on the open market, the Oakland Raiders have shown considerable interest with a desire to part ways with Carson Palmer. Now that Palmer will likely be released or traded in the coming days, the Raiders have agreed to terms with the Seahawks on a trade sending Flynn to Oakland in exchange for draft picks.
The only thing standing in the way of the deal coming to fruition is Flynn agreeing to pay cut in order to come to Oakland. Seattle is no longer in discussions with Oakland as the deal is basically done, the only problem is Flynn’s contract moving forward.
