The Kurt Rambis era in Minnesota is officially over as the Timberwolves shot callers have decided to fire the head coach after just two years. Not only did Rambis deserve to be fired after an extremely disappointing NBA-worst 17-65 last year, but during his time in Minnesota the former Los Angeles Lakers’ star won just 32 games with an ugly 32-132 record over two seasons.
The way the Minnesota Timberwolves fired Kurt Rambis was wrong in my opinion as they basically held on to him until most of the vacant NBA head coaching jobs were taken. The one job that Rambis would have almost certainly wanted to interview for the Los Angeles Lakers vacant head coaching position, but the Minnesota Timberwolves didn’t make a decision to fire the head coach until about month after Jerry Buss had already hired Mike Brown to replace Phil Jackson.
Not only was Phil Jackson the mentor of Kurt Rambis, but the consensus before Rambis took the job in Minnesota was that the former Lakers’ player would have been the successor to the Zen Master when he decided to call it quits. Unfortunately, Rambis missed out on the vacant position in Los Angeles and now will most likely be unemployed for quite some time.
Now that the Minnesota Timberwolves have parted ways with Kurt Rambis, the search for a new head coach begins and the struggling NBA franchise already has a short list of candidates. The one name that is at the top of the list right now is Bernie Bickerstaff of the Portland Trail Blazers.
There were plenty of other candidates for the Minnesota Timberwolves head coaching position, but since the team took so long to make a decision on Rambis, Bickerstaff is basically the entire list right now and could sign a two-year contract soon.
