Deciding who Coach of the Year in the NBA is is no easy task as it is one of those awards in the league that really is deceiving. The reason I say it is deceiving is the fact that the best head coach in the league doesn’t win the award every year. There is no question that every single year in recent memory that Phil Jackson has been the best head coach in the league and has the NBA titles to back it up (11), but he has only won the award once and that was when he was with the Chicago Bulls.
Ironically enough this season the front runner for the coach of the year award is the new head coach of the Chicago Bulls in Tom Thibodeau. Even though many head coaches in their first shot at leading an NBA franchise on the sidelines are a bit wet behind the ears, Thibodeau has fit in perfectly in the Windy City and quickly turn this playoff team into an NBA title contender.
Not only does Thibodeau have the Chicago Bulls on top in the Eastern Conference right now, but he also has arguably one of the best players in the game leading the way in NBA MVP candidate Derrick Rose.
Other Coach of the Year candidates:
Doug Collins, Philadelphia 76ers
Just like Tom Thibodeau, Doug Collins was able to come into his first season with the Philadelphia 76ers and completely turn them around as they seem to be a team playing with passion and motivation. Even though the 76ers are still a team to be considered a bottom feeder in the Eastern Conference, they will almost certainly make it in the playoffs and could surprise some people.
Phil Jackson, Los Angeles Lakers
With two straight NBA titles, a record 11 NBA titles and working on his fourth three-peat, there is no question that Phil Jackson is the best head coach in the NBA, but whether or not the NBA finally rewards him once again for that remains to be seen. The online sportsbooks have loved the Bulls this season.
