With the Kansas City Chiefs surprising everyone last season with an AFC West division title, the consensus was that Matt Cassel and company were a force to be reckoned with in the AFC Conference for years to come. Armed with a vastly improved defense led by Eric Berry and arguably the best running game in the NFL with Jamaal Charles leading the way out of the backfield, the Chiefs were thought to be a playoff contender once again this season, but multiple season-ending injuries to all three players mentioned above Kansas City only won five games heading into Week 15.
A 5-8 record at this point in the NFL regular season isn’t going to get it done and as a result the Kansas City Chiefs believed a change was needed on the sidelines. With that being said, the fall guy for this disappointing season was head coach Todd Haley has been fired after Week 14’s loss to the New York Jets (37-10).
Even though Haley did struggle to motivate his players this season, the head coach had arguably the toughest job on the sidelines this season. With injuries to Jamaal Charles, Matt Cassel, Eric Berry and Tony Moeaki, Haley lost most of his best players on offense and arguably his best player on defense. With all these losses, not many head coaches in the league could turn around the team and be playoff bound once again.
In my opinion, this firing was most likely personal as Todd Haley should have been given another chance to get this up-and-coming football team to form next season with all his Pro Bowl caliber talent healthy and ready to compete. Apparently, the Chiefs did see it that way and now will be on the hunt for a new head coach in the off-season.
