It’s been a tough few games for Brett Favre. With primary receiver Sydney Rice out for half the season and wide out Percy Harvin unable to spread the field, Favre has found himself running for his life with nowhere to throw on countless occasions. All that could change, however, thanks to the arrival of Randy Moss. Yes, this is the same Randy Moss who made his name playing for the Vikings. Of course, that’s where he developed his wacky, selfish reputation as well.
The trade has been a long time coming. Word had been filtering out of the Patriots organization for weeks that Moss was not happy and was looking to sign a new, long-term contract beyond his last year in New England. The Patriots were unwilling to sign him for the duration he required. When examined from that perspective, this trade was as inevitable as the tide.
Many in New England are not happy, wondering where their team will turn for a deep threat comparable to Moss. They wonder whether Wes Welker will enjoy the same production without teams needing to constantly worry about Moss burning them deep. The Patriots could turn to Brandon Tate, a speedy wide out who has returned two kicks for touchdowns so far this year. However, plenty of questions surround Tate, not the least of which is whether he has the magic hands of Randy Moss. At the least, the Moss trade is going to require the Patriots offense to redesign some plays and switch some routes.
In Minnesota, Favre is clearly excited to have Moss as a weapon. The dynamic duo is getting in as much practice as possible before their game against the Jets Monday night, which will be the second time Moss will play the Jets this year. The Vikings are banking on Moss to lead them deep into the playoffs this year. We’ll see if he can do it – do you think he can?
