Not only did the St. Louis Rams lose their game on Sunday to the Detroit Lions 44-6, a very embarrassing defeat, they also lost one of their star players – wide receiver Mark Clayton. Clayton won’t just be missing a couple of games either; he is set to miss the rest of the 2010 NFL season.

During the game, Clayton, who was acquired during the preseason this year from the Baltimore Ravens on September 6, sustained an injury to his right knee during the first quarter of Sunday’s game that now threatens the rest of his NFL season this year. The Rams have stated that the injury was actually to his patellar tendon.

Clayton will definitely be missed by the Ram’s star quarterback Sam Bradford, who was the Rams first draft pick in the 2010 NFL Draft who was drafted as number 1 overall. Bradford had become very fond of the wide receiver. Clayton had in fact become Bradford’s primary and favorite target for passing. Clayton had recorded 23 catches for 306 total yards along with two touchdowns.

This isn’t the first receiver that the Rams have lost this season. Early in August, the Rams lost another star receiver, Donnie Avery. With two of their best wide receivers lost, the Rams will likely look to signing another wide receiver before Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers in a week.

However, more than likely, Bradford will be passing to Danny Amendola, as Amendola will probably be next in line to take over the role as the team’s top receiver. Amendola did set career highs for himself during Sunday’s game with 12 total catches for 95 total yards.

The St. Louis Rams will host the San Diego Chargers for NFL Week 6 on October 17 at 12:00 p.m. CST at the Edward Jones Dome.
