The Detroit Lions went into today’s game with the New York Giants 1-4 with the Lions’ original starting quarterback Matthew Stafford dressed as the team’s No. 3 quarterback, who hasn’t played since the first half of Game 1 when he sprained his right shoulder. That season opener ended in a loss for the Lions.

Next week is the bye week for the Lions and I don’t think Shaun Hill could be any happier about that. Hill was injured in the first half of the game today, just prior to halftime. He suffered a hit by Barry Cofield, a defensive tackle for the Giants, on an incomplete. His left arm was hurt and he immediately ran to the locker room for an evaluation of his injured after the Lions called a timeout.

Replacing Hill in the game was backup quarterback Drew Stanton, who was able to complete 3 of 5 passes for 20 total yards through the rest of the first half. Jason Hanson also made a field goal leading to the end of the first half. At halftime, New York had a four-point lead at 14-10.

The Giants went on to get a lead of 21-10 over the Lions shortly after halftime. The home game ended well for the Giants defeating the Lions with a total score of 28-20, which was the Giants third consecutive victory and the 24th consecutive defeat on the road for the Lions.

During the second half of the game, Hill was spotted on the sidelines with his left arm in a sling. Hill apparently fractured his left forearm and while it is his non-throwing arm, it’s still important for him to have a proper recovery. Depending on where exactly that fracture is located in the forearm and how severe it is, his season could be very seriously in danger. More than likely, he’ll require surgery and Stafford will be back as an emergency backup quarterback come Week 7 until they Lions are ready to start him again - and if you ask me, they need to do something if they want to raise their 2010 wins.

Apart from losing Hill in the game against the Giants, the Lions also lost linebacker Zack Follett. Follett and Jason Pierre-Paul, defensive end for the Giants, collided and hit helmet-to-helmet, but Pierre-Paul lowered his head, which ultimately caused Follett’s neck to bend backwards. After the hit, Follett was on the ground motionless. He was placed on a backboard and was carted off the field to transfer him to a hospital nearby the field. He will have tests run to determine the extent of the damage. The good news is that he is conscious and he does have some feeling in his extremities.
