Over the past half-decade or so, the San Diego Chargers have been a very good football team and considered amongst the elite class in the NFL with a legitimate shot to contend for a Super Bowl title every single season. This year is no different with the Chargers getting off to an impressive 2-1 start with NFL MVP candidate quarterback Philip Rivers under center.
The one problem that the San Diego Chargers face moving forward is what to do with the injury prone and perennial Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates. There is no question that Gates is one of the best players to play the tight end position of all-time, but over the past couple of years he just hasn’t been able to stay healthy and is always big question mark on game day.
Even though the Chargers would love to hold onto Gates for as long as possible, the reality is that the San Diego franchise might be better off without him. With a 6-1 record without Gates on the field due to injury, the Chargers could seriously be considering a change at tight end and parting ways with the Pro Bowl tight end.
Coming into Week 4, the San Diego Chargers will most likely be without Antonio Gates yet again and the debate now is whether or not to shut him down for the next few weeks in order for him to get his ailing foot healthy and ready for the second half of the season. With the division rival Oakland Raiders playing as good as they have in the first three weeks of the season, the San Diego Chargers will need to do all they can to keep this team healthy and ready to compete or they could lose out on an AFC West division title for the second straight season.
