Last season the Pittsburgh Steelers were considered one of the best teams in the NFL once again as they were able to pave their way to the Super Bowl for the third time in the Ben Roethlisberger era in Pittsburgh. Not only has Big Ben been impressive in his time in Pittsburgh, but the Steelers have been rolling ever since they drafted him back in 2004.
This season the defending AFC Conference champion Pittsburgh Steelers had high expectations of dominating the competition in the AFC North division and making it as far as possible in the playoffs once again in order to contend for a Super Bowl title, but so far things haven’t gone as planned for head coach Mike Tomlin and company with the Steelers sitting in last place in their division with a 2-2 record.
In Week 4, the Pittsburgh Steelers went head-to-head against the vastly improved Houston Texans in what was thought to be a game that Big Ben and company could win, but would have their fair share of trouble against the potent offense of the Texans. Even though this turned out to be a low scoring affair, the Steelers defense did not prevail as the defending AFC Conference champion lost their second game of the season, 17-10.
Not only did the Steelers fall to last place in the AFC North division after the loss to the Texans, but Pittsburgh suffered some devastating injuries to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and former Defensive Player of the Year James Harrison.
With two of his best players banged up, Mike Tomlin might have to come with a different approach in the coming weeks and as a result the Steelers might continue to struggle this season and fall out of playoff contention. Whether or not the Steelers reign as an elite team in the NFL is over remains to be seen, but it would be safe to say that this season they will fail to live up to their high expectations.
