The Boston Celtics are in a transition period once again with the storied NBA franchise potentially at the beginning of an extensive rebuilding process. There’s been a lot of uncertainty surrounding the immediate future of the Celtics after the team was knocked out of the first round of the postseason against the rival New York Knicks.

The most uncertainty seems to be about the immediate future of superstar Paul Pierce. With Pierce entering the last year of his deal with the Celtics, the team must decide whether or not to release him, trade him or pay the $15 million for the final year deal.

The consensus as of right now is that Pierce will be headed elsewhere in one form or another. Along with Pierce potentially headed to another team via trade or release, veteran forward and future Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett may call it a career. Garnett signed a three-year deal last summer, but might not want to stick around after the departure of Pierce and the team seemingly headed toward a rebuilding process.

Although the fate of Garnett and Pierce remains up in the air moving forward, one thing seems certain with GM Danny Ainge confirming longtime head coach Doc Rivers will be back for at least one more season in Boston.

Rivers’ immediate future was put into question with the season coming to an end for the Celtics. There’s been talk of a trade involving Rivers or the fact that he’s not prepared or willing to go through yet another rebuilding process.

Despite the speculation surrounding Rivers’ future with the team, the longtime head coach will remain in Boston for the foreseeable future. With Garnett and Rajon Rondo potentially hanging around for another go around next season.
