The storied Boston Celtics NBA history is potentially on the verge of undergoing an extensive rebuilding process. Boston is coming off a disappointing season in which All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo went down with a torn ACL and Hall of Famers Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett took steps closer to retirement.

Along with Pierce and Garnett nearing the end of their careers in the NBA, head coach Doc Rivers is ready to start from scratch in Boston. Rivers coached a few losing teams in the past that struggled to get anything going and doesn’t want the same thing to happen next season.

As for Pierce, the face of the franchise for the last decade and a half will be in the last year of his deal next season. Pierce’s contract is worth $15 million in the final year of his deal, but the team can either trade or buyout the superstar. Pierce’s buyout is $5 million and must be done by the June 30 deadline.

The consensus as of right now is Pierce will be bought out, but a trade is still a possibility with the Los Angeles Clippers seemingly interested in making the deal.

Not only are the Clippers interested in Pierce, but Rivers is also in the running to head to Los Angeles over the summer.

Reportedly, Rivers is interested in the vacant coaching job in Los Angeles. Although Rivers is still under contract in Boston, it’s clear that he has no desire to stay with the Celtics if the rebuilding process will begin without Pierce or Garnett in the fold.

Despite the fact that Rivers can’t simply sign with the Clippers, trading the head coach along with the two stars might be a possibility. Celtics GM Danny Ainge would more than likely be interested in making a deal with the Clippers in order to acquire the young talent they’ll be offering.
