Once the Los Angeles Lakers were officially knocked out of the NBA playoffs in April, the speculation started to run rampant regarding the immediate future of Dwight Howard in the City of Angels. Howard has been reluctant to let his long-term plans be known in terms of re-signing with the Lakers or heading elsewhere in free agency.
The Lakers went on in to bring Howard to Los Angeles during the off-season last summer by trading Andrew Bynum to the Philadelphia 76ers in a four-way trade that resulted in Howard and Earl Clark coming to the Lakers.
The deal to acquire Howard was thought to be a steal with Bynum ultimately undergoing multiple knee surgeries once again and the league’s best center coming to Los Angeles in exchange.
Although the Lakers were unable to get a commitment from Howard once he was acquired from the Orlando Magic or throughout the NBA regular season, the team remains confident that the city and legacy of the Lakers will be enough to lock up him for the next five years.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, the nightmare season filled with injuries and disappointment wasn’t exactly the ideal situation to convince the superstar center to sign long-term. Howard has been adamantly declaring the fact that he’s not committing just yet and might not once July rolls around.
Reportedly, Howard is interested in exploring the market despite the fact he’d be taking a $30 million pay cut in order to sign with another team in the summer. Howard is apparently intrigued as to what the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks have to offer.
The Rockets appear to be the most attractive destination for Howard with a few things coming into play. Houston is a team on the rise in the NBA with James Harden, Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik leading the way. Howard’s presence might be the difference maker the team is looking for moving forward.
