The trade rumors circulating around the NBA over the past week or so have the Orlando Magic sending superstar center Dwight Howard to the Los Angeles Lakers in a three-way deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs would supposedly acquire All-Star center Andrew Bynum in this deal while the Magic would receive center Anderson Varejao and draft picks.
As of right now, this proposed trade seems to be the best option for all three teams involved. The Cavs definitely want to their hands on Bynum and the Lakers are dying to bring in Howard, but the Magic are waffling once again about what they’ll receive in the deal.
While talks are ongoing between all three of these teams about a blockbuster trade, one major concern for the Lakers and Cavs are contract extensions for Bynum and Howard. Apparently, both players want to hit free agency after next season due to the fact that they’ll be able to sign five-year deals opposed to three years.
The fact that both players are adamant about becoming free agents in order to cash in with long-term security isn’t out of the ordinary or unheard of with fellow superstar Chris Paul attempting the same move with the Los Angeles Clippers.
The only problem that Bynum and Howard may face is that if they’re seriously injured during the 2012-13 NBA season, the Lakers and Cavs might have second thoughts about signing max contract extensions.
In the meantime, Howard is making the most news for his decision to hit free agency with most NBA fans believing that he’s changing his mind about playing in Los Angeles long-term. It seems that any news from here on out concerning Howard will be negative until he is ultimately traded.
