Once drafted by the Washington Redskins with the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III was considered to be the future face of the storied NFL franchise. Robert Griffin III had all the tools to be successful on the next level and proved that right out of the gate with an incredible performance outdueling superstar Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints.
Although the Redskins struggled in the first half of the regular season, Griffin turned it on in the second half leading the Redskins to an impressive run to win the NFC East division title. Griffin’s performance, along with the emergence of rookie running back Alfred Morris, was enough to propel the Redskins into the playoffs bringing hope to the franchise that hadn’t won the division title since 1999.
Unfortunately for Washington, Robert Griffin III suffered a torn ACL in the first round of the NFL playoffs against the Seattle Seahawks. The Redskins ultimately fell to fellow rookie quarterback Russell Wilson in the first round and a lot of uncertainty surrounded Griffin’s future after the injury was officially diagnosed as a torn ACL.
Despite the fact that returning from an ACL injury and being the same caliber of player is anything but easy, Griffin is on pace to return to the field for Week 1 of the 2013 NFL season. Griffin has made tremendous progress during his recovery from surgery to repair the torn ACL and remains confident he’ll be ready to go for the first game of the season against the division rival Philadelphia Eagles.
With so much invested in Griffin moving forward, the team may ultimately decide to go with backup Kirk Cousins as the starter right out of the gate next season. Cousins proved to be a solid option for head coach Mike Shanahan under center while Griffin was out and may be called upon before rushing the reigning Rookie of the Year back.
