Heading into Week 1 of the NFL regular season opener against the New Orleans Saints, the Washington Redskins were the underdogs and projected to be in for a tough day against arguably one of the most potent offenses in the league.
With rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III making his debut, the Redskins were thought to get a good look at their franchise gunslinger. Not only did Washington get a look at the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, but they may have seen the face of the franchise for the foreseeable future with an unbelievable performance by the rookie.
After throwing for 320 yards, two touchdowns and rushing for 40 yards, Griffin proved to his many doubters that he can play on the next level and probably should’ve been the number one overall pick instead of the Indianapolis Colts’ Andrew Luck. Along with torching the Saints’ defense, Griffin showed poise and leadership capabilities that every team in the league hopes for in a starting quarterback.
As for Drew Brees, the one-time Super Bowl champion struggled to get his potent offense firing on all cylinders. Brees finished with a game-high 339 passing yards and three touchdowns, but throw two costly interceptions and couldn’t lead his team from behind in the fourth quarter.
The Saints ultimately fell to the up-and-coming Redskins, 40-32.
Along with an impressive debut for Griffin, the Redskins also saw their running game come into its own with Alfred Morris leading the way. Morris rushed for a game-high 96 yards and two touchdowns. The combination of Morris and Griffin may turn out to be lethal with the competition in the NFC Conference struggling to keep up with the promising Redskins squad.
The real question from here on out is whether or not this debut was a fluke and if it wasn’t, is Washington a true threat in a very competition NFC East division.
