Texans’ Ed Reed Says Tom Brady Slide Forced Hip Surgery

The Houston Texans had arguably one of the best all-around defenses in the NFL last season with Defensive Player of the Year, J.J. Watt, leading the way for the up-and-coming NFL franchise. Watt’s play along with the overall dominance of the Texans offensively was enough to clinch the AFC South division title and punch their ticket to the NFL playoffs.

Unfortunately for the Texans, the New England Patriots proved to be too much to handle and eliminated the higher seeded Texans with relative ease. Ironically enough, superstar quarterback Tom Brady was the main reason one of the biggest off-season acquisitions for the Texans may not start the season on the field for Houston.

Last season, Brady slid into Reed’s thigh while trying to avoid a major hit from the superstar safety formerly of the Baltimore Ravens. As a result, Reed suffered an injury that now the veteran safety attributes to Brady’s slide.

During the NFL off-season, Reed signed a three-year $15 million deal with the Texans after spending his entire career with the Ravens. The move was unexpected even though many people anticipated Reed potentially heading elsewhere once officially a free agent.

With Reed requiring hip surgery, the Texans feel as though they’ve received damaged good in the deal. Reed disagrees and now blames the injury and surgery that followed on Brady’s sliding into him.

Although Reed’s timetable for his return remains uncertain moving forward, the Texans acquiring the veteran was likely a step in the right direction. It remains to be seen whether or not the Texans will be able to contend with powerhouses like the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots in the AFC next season, but the team is arguably much improved on the defensive side of the football as long as Reed suffers no setbacks.
