With a second Super Bowl title in the books and Ray Lewis heading off into the sunset to pursue a career as an NFL analyst with ESPN, the Baltimore Ravens will potentially look much different in their title defense next season with Lewis retiring, quarterback Joe Flacco possibly leaving via free agency and veteran safety Ed Reed potentially ready to leave Baltimore in March.
At this point in time, Lewis retiring and Flacco signing a lucrative long-term contract extension with the Ravens appear to be foregone conclusions. Lewis has let it known that he has no intention to return to the team next season and winning another Super Bowl title may have convinced him to stay retired that much more while the Ravens’ front office will do everything within their power to hold onto Flacco with an offer that he can’t refuse.
As for Reed, the veteran safety appears to be the one player of three biggest names on the Ravens that is undecided about his immediate future. Unlike Lewis, Reed still has a lot of football left in him with only 12 seasons to his credit compared to Lewis’ 17.
Although Reed seems to want to re-sign with the team, it remains to be seen whether or not the feeling is mutual with the Ravens yet to approach the veteran with a contract extension offer or showing any indication of wanting to keep him around next season.
With Reed’s options seemingly open, the 12-year veteran may ultimately chose to head elsewhere and the New Orleans Saints might be interested in locking him up to a short-term deal to help rebuild the defense in the aftermath of the bounty scandal that decimated the team’s chemistry on that side of the football in 2012.
Along with the Saints, the New England Patriots will more than likely take a run at signing Reed. Despite being a bitter rival, Reed seems open to the idea of being coached by Bill Belichick and playing for a successful organization like the Patriots.
