The Philadelphia Eagles are coming off a second consecutive season without a playoff berth and a lot of questions heading into the off-season. Although the team failed to live up to expectations once again with one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, the Eagles may be able to quickly bounce back after some drastic moves before next season.
The first move the team made that was expected was the firing of longtime head coach Andy Reid. After 14 seasons in Philadelphia, the team felt it was time to move on with Reid being fired and quickly being hired by the Kansas City Chiefs a few weeks later.
Shortly after Reid’s firing, the rumors began to swirl about the Eagles’ next head coach and likely candidates to fill the position. The team immediately targeted Chip Kelly of the Oregon Ducks and was unsuccessful in their first attempt to lure in the college head coach, but ultimately was able to convince Kelly to take the job leading to speculation about the quarterback position and the offense intended to be run by the first-year head coach.
Quarterback Michael Vick seems to be the perfect fit for Kelly’s style of offense, but it appears that the team may be willing to part ways with Vick this week to avoid paying $3 million that will be guaranteed on Thursday.
Vick’s production fell off considerably this season with the veteran quarterback struggling with injuries and dealing with one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. Although not entirely Vick’s fault, the team will more than likely move on in order to get off to a fresh start with Kelly as the leader on the sidelines in Philadelphia.
Possible replacements for Vick are Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers, Dennis Dixon of the Baltimore Ravens and Matt Flynn of the Seattle Seahawks. All three players have been linked to the Eagles over the last few weeks.
