The 2012 NFL season is finally in the books with a thrilling finish in Super Bowl XLVII with the Baltimore Ravens pulling off the storybook ending for superstar linebacker Ray Lewis by getting the best of the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday night at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Even though the Ravens were finally able to win that elusive second championship in franchise history, Baltimore will head into the off-season with a lot of questions surrounding the future of the franchise.
Although speculation remains in terms of a return to the Ravens next season, Lewis fully intends to retire and move onto his next gig as an NFL analyst with ESPN. Veteran safety Ed Reed has also been in the headlines as of late with talk of the team possibly not re-signing the veteran and letting him head elsewhere in free agency with the New England Patriots and New Orleans Saints potentially ready to swoop him up to improve their defense once the reigning Super Bowl champion becomes available to the highest bidder.
Despite Lewis’ departure and Reed possible heading elsewhere once free agency begins in March, the team’s main concern and highest priority moving forward is signing Super Bowl MVP quarterback Joe Flacco.
Once the Super Bowl was in the books and the team had lifted the Vince Lombardi trophy for the first time since 2000, Flacco’s rookie contract with the team expired leading to speculation of whether or not he’d return next season with a lucrative long-term deal or test the free agent market with plenty of teams likely ready to show interest.
Fortunately for Ravens fans, Flacco doesn’t seem to want to play anywhere else and the team appears to be ready to make Flacco the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL with potentially as much as $20 million per season set to be earned by the up-and-comer.
