One of the most intriguing and anticipated matchups of Week 2 was the Philadelphia Eagles traveling to the Georgia Dome to take on the Atlanta Falcons. Not only was this a potential playoff preview, but it was the return of Michael Vick to Atlanta as a starting quarterback for another team and the superstar was ready to put on a show against his former team.
Despite being a very good football game between two of the league’s elite teams, the Eagles suffered a major blow in this game as Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick went down with a concussion in the third quarter and Philadelphia wasn’t able to recover. It would be hard to argue that the Eagles weren’t the best team in this Week 2 showdown, but Philly just couldn’t contend with the Falcons after Vick headed to the locker room in the third.
On his way to the locker room to get checked out, Vick pointed at the scoreboard to say the Eagles were on top and that Philly were onto their second win of the season by handing the Falcons their second loss of the year. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen as backup quarterback Mike Kafka couldn’t keep the Eagles above water.
Mike Kafka played fairly well in place of Michael Vick by finishing with 72 passing yards and no touchdowns, but he didn’t commit turnovers like Vick as the superstar threw an interception and fumbled three times losing two of them. Vick finished with 267 total yards (242 passing, 25 rushing) and two passing touchdowns.
So as a result of Michael Vick suffering a concussion and heading to the locker room in the third quarter, the Philadelphia Eagles were handed their first loss of the season to the Atlanta Falcons, 35-31.
It is uncertain at this point when Michael Vick will be able to get back under center for the Philadelphia Eagles, but it would be safe to say that either Vince Young or Mike Kafka will be the starter for the next few weeks.
