The sales numbers are in for NBA and NFL jerseys with superstar Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks and rookie Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins leading the way.
Over the past month or so, the Knicks have been arguably the hottest team in the NBA winning 13 straight games while maintaining the second seed in the Eastern Conference. New York has been red-hot as of late and mainly due to Anthony’s performance with the superstar averaging 40.6 points per game in the last five contests.
As a result of Anthony’s scoring tear in the team’s recent resurgence, the perennial All-Star has been able to lead the team to the second seed in the East and propelled himself to the distinction as the league’s leading scorer.
Last season, three-time NBA MVP LeBron James of the defending NBA champion Miami Heat was the leader in the jersey sales category with Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls leading a season before. Anthony is the first player in franchise history to hold the distinction since the sales has started being recorded as of 2001.
As for the NFL, Griffin burst onto the scene this past season leading the Redskins to an NFC East division title after winning seven consecutive games to finish the regular season. Washington was able to punch their ticket to the postseason while developing a bright future with Griffin as the face of the franchise.
With Griffin turning a lot of heads in 2012, the rookie was able to beat out Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos in the jersey sales category. Not only was Griffin able to beat Manning, but also he’s made NFL history by having the best selling jersey in a one-year span.
Although Griffin made a huge impact in his first season in Washington, the future of the up-and-comer is very much up in the air after he suffered torn ACL in the NFL playoffs in the loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Griffin is reportedly making a remarkable recovery from surgery, but it remains to be seen whether or not he’ll be the same player next season.
