Former No. 1 pick and one-time BCS champion, JaMarcus Russell, was basically was nothing more than a joke and in contention for the biggest NFL Draft bust of all-time. The Oakland Raiders released Russell after three disappointing years with the team. Russell struggled to maintain a decent playing weight and became progressively worse under center during his time in Oakland until the team decided to part ways with the once-promising draft prospect.

After the Raiders cut their ties with Russell, the former top pick in the draft had an uncertain future in the NFL to say the least. No team in the league wanted to tough Russell with a ten-foot pole either as a starter or backup quarterback. Basically, Russell’s career was over and another No. 1 pick was dubbed a bust after the Raiders rolled the dice on a player that didn’t pan out.

In 2013, JaMarcus Russell has made a valiant attempt to convince a team in the league to give him another shot. Russell’s time as a starter in the NFL is more than likely over with no team willing to give him a chance, but Russell becoming a backup doesn’t seem to be as much of a stretch as it once was.

Reportedly, the Chicago Bears are willing to take a chance on Russell after the former LSU standout lost over 50 pounds and trained with the likes of Jeff Garcia and Marshall Faulk in an attempt to make an NFL comeback.

Currently, the Bears have veteran quarterback Jay Cutler under center with the backups yet to be determined. Although it may be a long shot for Russell to sign another one-year deal with an NFL team, it appears Chicago may have considerable interest in signing the once-promising star quarterback. Russell may have another shot to play in the league if the Bears choose to sign him before next season.
