Early last week we reported that there was some speculation about the cutting of JaMarcus Russell from the Oakland Raiders. Many thought that it was a good idea while others thought Russell should stay and have the opportunity to play with Oakland. Well, the official answer has now been released by the Oakland Raiders and they have decided to release Russell from the team.
Although JaMarcus Russell was the first overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft from LSU and the team shelled out over $30 million in his first NFL season alone, he has never really been able to meet the expectations of his coaches. He didn’t attend the first training camp for the team and ended up missing the start of the season. Needless to say when he started playing, which wasn’t until the end of the 2007 year in December, it didn’t go that well for him.
Russell went on to start 15 games in the 2008 NFL season. In 2009, he was struggling with his first nine starts to then be replaced on the roster last season by Bruce Gradkowski. In Russell’s NFL career, he started a total of 25 games to only win 7 of them, not even half. This from a player that helped his LSU team to win the Super Bowl against Notre Dame and to be voted the MVP. Most NFL sports betting sites have had the Raiders as underdogs for some time now, and Russell did not help much.
Apart from terrible playing in his NFL career, Russell is being released from the team due to a recent acquirement of quarterback Jason Campbell. Campbell was acquired by the Raiders April 24 from the Washington Redskins.
Although Russell is no longer a part of the Oakland Raiders, they do still owe him money for the 2010 upcoming NFL season because he had a guaranteed $9.45 million in his contract. If they would have gotten rid of him a little sooner, maybe they could have saved that money.
