After winning the NBA Coach of the Year award for the first time in his career, George Karl has been fired by the Denver Nuggets. Karl led the Nuggets to one of the best seasons in franchise history with the team locking up the top seed with 57 wins during the regular season.
Unfortunately, Karl didn’t buy himself any leverage after one of the best seasons in Denver with the team deciding to go in another direction after the reigning Coach of the Year asked for a contract extension.
Although considered one of the best head coaches in the game today, the Nuggets seem to be headed in a completely different direction with general manager Masai Ujiri deciding to accept an offer from the Toronto Raptors. Ujiri’s exit had been speculated from quite some time with one of the best general managers in the league seemingly having one foot out of the door. Karl’s exit was also linked to Ujiri leaving town.
With the Nuggets officially parting ways with Karl, the veteran head coach will be arguably one of the most sought after coaches available on the open market. Karl may have been let go by Denver, but is still a very respected and successful head coach on the NBA level.
Despite the fact Karl is leaving an ideal situation in Denver with the team potentially having a bright future with a promising young team, there are a few head coaching vacancies that will intrigue the veteran.
Currently, the Los Angeles Clippers and Brooklyn Nets are looking for a new head coach. These are the two most desirable vacancies left with the Clippers potentially ready to bring him in for an interview.
It’ll be interesting to see where Karl ultimately ends up, but there’s no doubt he won’t be unemployed for long with teams already showing interest in his services.
