Last season the San Diego Chargers suffered a down year with superstar quarterback Philip Rivers struggling and the team just not being able to get back on track after a slow start. With multiple injuries plaguing the team and a potential rebuilding process on the horizon, the Chargers failed to win the AFC West division title or even make the playoffs. This was highly uncharacteristic for the perennial Super Bowl title contender, but it may be a sign of things to come in San Diego.
As if coming off a disappointing season with a bleak future wasn’t bad enough, the San Diego Chargers were hit with another bombshell on Wednesday with the departure of arguably their best offensive threat through the air. Philip Rivers’ number one target in the offense, outside of tight end Antonio Gates, has decided to take his talents elsewhere.
Reportedly, free agent wide receiver and two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Vincent Jackson has agreed to sign a five-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The consensus in San Diego was that Jackson wasn’t going to return to the Chargers, but there was a slight chance they may be able to re-sign him. It is no secret that Jackson has been looking for a big payday and he has finally received it with the Bucs.
Apparently, Vincent Jackson signed a five-year deal worth about $55.55 million. This contract will pay the Pro Bowl wideout $13 million each of the first two years and $11 million in the third year. This addition to the Bucs’ receiving corps could make them one of the most dynamic and talented in the NFL next season by giving quarterback Josh Freeman the go-to guy he has been looking for in the Tampa Bay offense.
