Last season the Detroit Lions burst onto the scene in the NFL by becoming arguably one of the most exciting and promising young teams in the league. Not only did the Lions have a breakout year with quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson having career seasons, but Detroit finally made it back into the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
With the Detroit Lions a team on the rise in the NFC Conference, the team made a move on Wednesday to secure the future for the next seven years. Apparently, the Lions wanted to make sure that no other team in the league would get their hands on arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL in Calvin Johnson. With that being said, Detroit made NFL history by signing the up-and-coming wideout to a contract extension that is the largest contract the league has ever seen.
Reportedly, the Detroit Lions and Calvin Johnson have agreed to terms on a contract worth $132 million over the next eight years. This deal is so big that no big-name player in the history of the league comes close. This large contract extension will almost certainly create some debate around the league whether or not Johnson is really worth this gigantic number, but the pressure will be on to perform from here on out with Johnson basically being dubbed the best wideout in the league.
Details of this megadeal for Megatron have the perennial Pro Bowler having $60 million guaranteed in the contract. That is a monster number that eclipses Arizona Cardinals’ wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald’s contract in which he will make $120 million with $50 million guaranteed. As I said before, it remains to be seen whether or not Calvin Johnson is worth this huge contract
