Marques Colston signs five-year deal with the New Orleans Saints

The player movement and re-signings around the NFL as of late are starting to make a lot of news as it seems that teams are wasting no time bringing in new players or locking up current stars for the foreseeable future. Last week it appeared that the New Orleans Saints were in serious trouble with the bounty acquisitions, a franchise tag on Drew Brees due to failed contract talks and seemingly losing out on free agent wide receiver Marques Colston.

On top of all the bad news coming out of the Big Easy, the Saints decided to work out retired future Hall of Famer, Randy Moss. Despite being one of the top receivers in the game during his prime, Moss was a major disappointment in the last year of his career after bouncing from the New England Patriots to the Minnesota Vikings and finally ending up with the Tennessee Titans.

Even though Moss was impressive in his workout with the Saints, the veteran wideout had seemingly turned back the clock and was ready to make a return. Unfortunately, it won’t be with the Saints as he ended up signing with the San Francisco 49ers.

Now the New Orleans Saints were stuck in a sticky situation as the wide receiver position was in jeopardy. Fortunately, shortly after Moss signed with the 49ers, Colston chose to re-sign with the Saints in a five-year deal. The new deal for the team’s top wideout is worth about $40 million over the course of five years. Along with the lengthy contract, Colston will have $19 million in potential guarantees.

Marques Colston put up some impressive numbers last week with 1143 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 80 receptions. Colston had more than 1,000 yards in five of the last six seasons with the Saints.
