Indeed, the marathon Hollywood ceremony honoring television's "best" is, in fact, reflective of the medium itself: a parade of monotony occasionally broken up by memorable moments that range from the sublime to the shocking. The trio was among Friday's honorees at the second annual Television Advocacy Awards. "The final scene of her ascending to the throne nearly feels like a metaphor for the Primetime Emmy awards ceremony", James Hibberd, editor-at-large at Entertainment Weekly, told Reuters.

The carpet coverage begins at 4 p.m. PDT on ABC, followed by the awards at 5 p.m. But the jaw-droppers will be on glittering display, keeping even the shrewdest of pundits from batting a thousand in the prognostication department.

The question is though, will it pay off on television's biggest night? The hit fantasy drama might seem like a dead cert, but there are a lot of wild cards in this case: The Americans, long overlooked by awards, is a ripper of a show, and Mr Robot is one of the buzziest shows on TV, off the back of a smash hit first season. Macy's work on Shameless is astounding and Anderson has a more than fair shot given he's coming from a network sitcom, but Tambor's work on Transparent is luminous. Could Better Call Saul reap the rewards of riding Breaking Bad's coattails (with a potential Gus Fring season three cameo)?

"Fargo" (FX) vs. "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" (FX): Compared to the eminently watchable behind-the-scenes look at the O.J. Simpson trial, the crime anthology "Fargo", which channels the Coen Brothers' astringent humor and bleak commentary on human nature, may be a bit of an acquired taste. It will be named best limited series. And, for that matter, AMC fielded a sensational miniseries based on a John le Carre novel, "The Night Manager". There were many good reasons to watch "The People v. O.J. Simpson". In its second season, the show depicts an exhilarating web of murder, lies, and deceit in a uniquely mundane American setting, and has earned high praise equal to that of the renowned first season, which also received 18 Emmy nominations during the 2014 award ceremony. HBO already leads the field after winning 16 Creative Arts Emmys last weekend - nine alone from Game Of Thrones, which won a record 12 Emmys in 2015. From the best lead actor/actress to the most outstanding hairstyling and sound, the Emmys cover it all, leaving no televised stone unturned. Of the ABC comedy's three nominations (Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Lead Actress in a Comedy series, Outstanding Comedy Series), Anderson has the best chance of bringing home the trophy.
