Auto maker Fiat Chrysler is recalling 1.9 million vehicles over an air bag defect that may be linked to three deaths and five injuries. Thus far, three deaths and five injuries are reportedly linked to this issue.

At issue is a potentially flawed module that controls the system, and it wiring.

The defects could prevent air-bags and automatic seat-belt tighteners from being deployed properly in crashes, Fiat Chrysler said. Also recalled are 2010-2014 Jeep Patriot and Compass sport utility vehicles.

In Canada, an additional 142,959 vehicles are recalled; in Mexico 81,901 will be recalled, including the 2010 Chrysler Cirrus compact auto.

Whenever airbags or seat belts are involved in recalls, it's important to get the problem addressed as fast as possible.

Fiat Chrysler uncovered the problem analyzing crashes and collecting data from vehicles, the company said.

It's the second recall this year for this specific type of device at Fiat Chrysler.

The problem isn't related to the huge recall of nearly 70 million Takata air bag inflators used by 17 carmakers, including Fiat Chrysler, the company said.

Actual recall repairs aren't ready to proceed. Recent accidents resulted in deaths and injuries because of the airbag defect.

The recall is unrelated to General Motors Co.'s recall last week of more than 4 million vehicles with faulty air bag and seat belt modules.
