US agency orders corrective action after gas pipeline spill

18 September 2025

Tanker trucks line up at a Colonial Pipeline Co. facility in Pelham, Ala., near the scene of a 250,000-gallon gasoline spill on Friday, Sept. 16, 2016. Spills and gasoline leaks can contaminate soil, groundwater, surface water, and air.

The 5,500-mile long pipeline runs from Houston, Texas to New York City and normally carries 1.3 million barrels of refined gasoline and other petroleum products a day.

According to PHMSA, the company is monitoring air quality in the area and has said that Alabaster, a town about 3 miles from the leak site, isn't now at risk from the vapors.

"We are working with state and national officials to make sure North Carolina is not impacted by this leak", said McCrory.

It's now been one week since Colonial Pipeline discovered the break in that gasoline pipeline in Alabama.

Prices have yet to move much.

But pump prices could spike by as much as 15 cents per gallon or more in those three states, as well as North Carolina and Virginia, in the next week, and up to 20 cents per gallon in SC, according to GasBuddy.com analyst Patrick DeHaan. From Thursday night to Friday morning, gas rose by an average of 3.1 cents a gallon.

"Based on current projections and consultations with industry partners, parts of Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina and SC will be the first markets to be impacted by any potential disruption in supply".

Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey could also see a slight increase.
