The 28-year-old's contract is due to expire in 2019 and he'd previously expressed a desire to re-sign for boyhood club Independiente once his City deal winds down.

Guardiola said he was "so, so happy" about the news.

His dramatic late goal against QPR in 2012 secured the first of two Premier League titles City have won since his arrival and he bagged his second hat-trick of the current season during Wednesday's 4-0 Champions League win over Borussia Monchengladbach.

But after that you start to think again about the next one.

City are now top of the table having won their first four games but after their first Champions League game was postponed until Wednesday due to adverse weather, Howe believes his side have the upper hand.

Pep Guardiola's side's display was even more impressive considering Sergio Aguero was absent through suspension, but the Argentine striker was not the only potential starter unavailable for selection.

Vincent Kompany is still not match fit.
