Tropical Storm Julia keeping strength off coast of Carolinas

Tropical Storm Karl has maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour (75 km/h), with higher gusts.

Latest update had the center of Tropical Storm Ian was located near latitude 35.5 North, longitude 52.4 West. Ian is moving toward the north-northeast near 20 miles per hour. Forecasters think the storm may start moving west-southwest by Saturday night, influenced by a strong subtropical ridge, before turning west-northwest. There's now no threat to land.

The storm is wandering slowly east off the coast of SC and had previously been downgraded to a tropical depression. The storm had maximum winds of 40 miles per hour.

Julia gained strength Thursday afternoon as it continues to churn off the Carolina coast.

The tropical system once churning up the East Coast as Tropical Storm Julia has now been downgraded to a tropical depression.

As Julia meanders off the coast for the next few days, she isn't expected to lash the area with high winds. It is now the third named tropical system in the Atlantic, joining Ian and Julia.

Tropical depression #12 over the far E. Atlantic has become "Karl". The National Hurricane Center gives it a 20 percent chance to develop into something a little more organized before heading inland late Friday.

In the eastern Pacific, Orlene is a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour.

There are no current watches or warnings in effect. & will not be written when/if a named storm is nearby. A tropical disturbance located in the Gulf of Mexico was continuing to produce disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity Friday morning. Forecasters say this general motion is expected to continue through Saturday.

Meanwhile, a new tropical depression has formed far out over the Atlantic and is moving west. Some development is possible over the next few days, forecasters say.
