Google's new phones won't have stock Android or carry Nexus name

02 September 2025

The only thing that is clear so far is that Google will soon release its new smartphones.

Google's 2016 Nexus smartphones are codenamed Marlin and Sailfish.

As of now, the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C, and the General Mobile 4G (Android One) are supported. The company would re-brand the Nexus handsets with all new title and a special treat on the Android operating system.

Google is also working on its own smartphone, and while it is not yet clear, the company might tag that phone with the Nexus series.

The two phones built by HTC will be carrying a different brand then Nexus, sources told Android Central. Google has been adding exclusive features and apps to the Nexus line-up, the most recent of it being the new WiFi data saving app released for the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. HTC has specified that the unlocked variants of its smartphones will be the first to receive to Android 7.0 update. Leaks have pointed to the a new Nexus Launcher for these devices, a name that will probably change at launch.

I've been at Manchester United for a long time, so it is the end of an era but I couldn't really see a path through to the first team there.

The duo are rumored to be 5-inch and 5.5-inch handsets developed by HTC under the code names Marlin and Sailfish. Erm. that is, devices-formerly-known-as-Nexus-perhaps, we suppose. The handsets are expected to get unveiled alongside Google's latest mobile OS, Android Nougat. In fact, it might even be better for consumers because now they would get a phone over which Google will possible have a greater ownership right.

The newly released updated software Nougat OS lists "An iPhone or iPad device" as one of the setup options when you boot it up on a new device, which will take you to the Android switch URL on the web.

Summing all the reports, we can expect more than two smartphones from Google this year. Now that's a good question since everyone expected the new Google phones as early as September.

It should be noted that Motorola's Rick Osterloh was hired in April to head a newly formed hardware division, which will be in charge of Google-branded hardware.
