Thousands of migrants and refugees were rescued off the coast of Libya on Monday during a large scale effort involving Italian naval ships and other vessels. Those rescued in the mission were taken to the Port of Calabria in Sicily.
Among those arriving on Wednesday was a three-month-old Nigerian baby girl who was born in Libya and baptised Noa Mary on an Italian navy boat on Tuesday.
In 2015, over 1 million migrants made it to Europe.
Thousands of migrants, many from Eritrea and Somalia, had set off in about 20 fishing boats a few hours earlier for the southern Mediterranean Sea, The Guardian reported.
Numerous migrants using the central Mediterranean route, which is from Libya or other north African countries to Italy, are from Nigeria, Eritrea, and Gambia according to the IOM.

Yesterday's rescue highlighted the unsafe tactics used by smugglers, who charge large sums for space on a boat they know will be unlikely to make the journey. The IMO says there are still 275,000 migrants in Libya waiting to make the journey to Italy.
With migration routes through Turkey and the Balkans restricted, more and more people are trying the Mediterranean route between Libya and Italy.
